Republican Chris Christie, a corporate lawyer turned crusading federal prosecutor, was elected New Jersey’s 55th governor last night, ousting Jon Corzine, an unpopular but well-funded incumbent, in a race viewed as an early referendum on President Obama. It was the first time a Republican won a statewide election in New Jersey since Gov. Christie Whitman was re-elected by a narrow margin in 1997. Corzine became the first incumbent to lose an election since Jim Florio in 1993.

In the see-saw New Jersey Governor's race, Republican challenger Christopher Christie has 42 percent to Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine's 40 points, with 12 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Six percent remain undecided. This compares with a 43 to 38 percent Corzine lead, with 13 percent for Daggett, in an Oct. 28 survey.
