Republican Chris Christie ousts Jon Corzine in N.J. governor's race

Republican Chris Christie, a corporate lawyer turned crusading federal prosecutor, was elected New Jersey’s 55th governor last night, ousting Jon Corzine, an unpopular but well-funded incumbent, in a race viewed as an early referendum on President Obama. It was the first time a Republican won a statewide election in New Jersey since Gov. Christie Whitman was re-elected by a narrow margin in 1997. Corzine became the first incumbent to lose an election since Jim Florio in 1993.

In the see-saw New Jersey Governor's race, Republican challenger Christopher Christie has 42 percent to Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine's 40 points, with 12 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Six percent remain undecided. This compares with a 43 to 38 percent Corzine lead, with 13 percent for Daggett, in an Oct. 28 survey.

Convicted former state Sen. Joseph Coniglio reports to prison Nov. 9

The Bergen County Democrat was convicted in September on federal corruption charges for accepting bribes in exchange for steering state grants to Hackensack University Medical Center. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison, and must pay a $15,000 fine.
